...down the plug hole? Don't you just love plug threads (until they strip)?

I dunno it's a funny old world. Did I post something controversial, I think not. A BPR6ES, NGK Made in France, is the direct equivalent to both the dodgy looking Bosch-India WR7DDC4 and the WQR8DC. The BPE5ES being about half a step hotter than the Bosch "8". Using a plug that is too hot can cause pre-ignition which can cause pinking, it can also be caused from weak mix or low RON/octane fuel and too high compression. Plug gap 0.70mm, the handbook setting, not 0.020-in as given elsewhere (on this motor). The BPR6ES is basically the stock plug only it's well made; in use there's little difference in colouration (yes I do know how to read plugs) between it and the BPR5ES. Running at 0.50mm (0.020-in) there was some kind of spark break-down and opine a minimum 0.70mm is correct, 0.70mm 'loose' or '0.70-0.80mm', I use round wire gauges, not tight-fit on a flat feeler

The normal hard black carbon soot probably is modern fuel but I had soft black fluffy soot rather like you find in the chimney after a coal fire. And yes, the Redex has got rid of it, it did work but the 'good' hard blackening is still there. A /lot/ of Redex and an italian tune-up still works. That or strip the head off, it was that bad; probable cause missing and plug fouling (note earlier dodgy HT cap). Putting a 'normal' dose of Redex in the tank is for when you've had to use iffy fuel, maybe water in it, otherwise not used at all.

The bike starts first time, never has been a problem.

The PCv tinkers with the ECU mapping, it's not the first time I've had an ECU remapped. If you talk to the remap guys as I have (Viezu in Italy, where I believe the RE map comes from, Italy that is) they'll tell you vehicles are mapped for the entire world: the PCv uses a map developed by H for this set up. I have it switched so I can flip presently between the base map and H's 'free-flow + K&N' and again yes, the developed map is smoother and provides a more pleasant ride. Altitude only gets to 300m downland here, not over 18,000-ft. The base mapping always tries to do everything and it tries to do too much, tailoring the map to local environment/fuel lets it run more efficiently and the motor therefore less stressed and happier. It's never going to be a fire breathing road burner but there is a little more power in the mid-range. I got this bike for ducking up narrow lanes, it's idea for that where a bigger bike would be completely unsuitable.

I fill it with best BP or Shell, the local supermarket fuels have had problems (wrong stuff in tanks???) and there's no ESSO near here.

Scaly I don't why you're worried about soot - don't the French run their Traction Avants on chicken shit??

SOOT?

I never mentioned soot? Nice try, but you're not dragging me into this one!

Scaly asks "Who is winning this one at the moment?"
On word count jeffers has an unassailable lead ;)

As its such a nice day with dry roads (well, at least everywhere that isn't in the shade) I thought I'd put in a brand new Bosch WR7DDC4 and try it for size. I was a little disappointed that the NGK BPR6EIX came out well sooty, core as well as around the outside. The Indian Bosch fired 'er up first press of the button and once warm the motor ran as clean as its ever done - even managed to pull an indicated 85 in top sitting up which I have never achieved before with either NGK! The only thing which spoilt my run was severe arthritis in the right thumb which means opening the throttle is very painful - made worse by the cold!

Best lay of that electric start button. yes it was good today. Headed south towards Dorset, looped back and over into Wales before heading home. Another faultless 250 miles clocked up on the BPR6ES :)

Unfortunately my 2011 Classic 500 doesn't have a kick start, ric. If the plug is sooted up, you get three goes max with the electric leg and then its a new plug and a run and bump. I notice the ks is back on the new Classics . . .

Shame they dropped it, because if the battery looses enough charge so it only just wont start on the button, the kicker will work and get you another 15 miles when only running the fuel pump and the ignition system - and fifteen miles uphill can come in very very handy.

Not too sooty plug photo's for nigelphoto.
BR> The bike passed the 6,000 mile mark whilst out today so did an oil change on my return home. While draining I removed the BPR6ES plug and took some photo's and then put it back in the bike.
