Hello again REG--------- Oh heck, still got those troubles eh ?? Well at least I hope you had a decent Christmas ? Now then----This "massive pre-ignition" you mention...If you've just turned the ignition OFF then it's NOT pre-ignition ( because there isn't any electrics ) but more likely DETONATION or RUNNING-ON caused by excessive carbon deposits on the piston and cyl. head glowing red-hot and igniting incoming fuel/air mixture..------ BUT..... given all the problems you had just recently I'm wondering if the ignition switch itself is giving intermittent open / short circuit probs ?? They are known to internally "self-dismantle" on occasions.....just a thought.......

Hello JAFFA---------- ships that pass in the night ?? It certainly has the look of the switch, I think.

Back firing to me is when the piston goes backwards (before T.D.C.)at fires back through the carb.Front firing to me is when fuel is burnt in the exhaust system.Am i talking bullsh*t?

Jaffa90: Technical notes is in the menu on the left of the screen, 4 from the bottom between Books and Manuals and Photo Gallery. Also, Site Map, at the bottom will display all the models and parts manuals which can be opened by clicking on the page you want to look at. Click below if you can`t find it.

No joy Leon, still updating the notes. What`s your version of a backfire?

A backfire to me; is the ignition or valve timing is out, a sooted-up spark plug will cause it; moisture in the electrics, duff condenser will cause burning points / coil on way out, although most coils seem to just go open-circuit suddenly; on multi-cylinder engines, wrong HT lead on spark plug can cause a beauty of an explosion in the muffler and blow it apart; I won`t say how I found this out.

May be i`m getting mixed up with a backfire and a kick back fire start (40 year ago),ok if your riding along as said by Reg and hear a back fire then it`s at the back of the bike noise through the exhaust system.

Hi guys---------- LEON, I had the same thing with my GL1000 Goldwing after mis-fitting new points--- and it was inside the garage as well !!! More ringing in my ears than a BT demonstration day !!!! Hello JAFFA,------ The term "Back-fire" I think is generally understood to be a single, VERY loud "BANG" from the exhaust pipe....sometimes, depending on the actual cause, this may be several and intermittent VERY loud "BANGS" from the exhaust---maybe enough to blow the pipe off the cylinder head....A "mis-fire" is generally when the engine is running smoothlu and ok but every now & then the regularity is interrupted by literally a MISSED FIRING..... A "Spit-Back" is again literally just that, but there is more of a "POP" this time at the Carb / inlet mouth and usually with a trace of white gas/smoke....Normally occurs when cold starting and not enough choke has been applied--but not always the case.....A "Kick back" ??, OK, well remember that the ignition is always set to happen before the piston gets to Top Dead Centre. So-- as you spin the flywheels over, the piston rises and the plug ignites the fuel/air mix. --if the rotation speed is NOT fast enough to carry the piston over TDC then the ignited gasses will push the piston and flywheels BACKWARDS and, if the kickstarter is still engaged, it will try and lift you into orbit !! .... Please remember that}--- Fuel type, Air filtration, Carb type & settings, ignition settings, Combustion chamber details, cam type and timings, exhaust type, silencer type---even cooling system and lubrication have an effect on an engines performance and are all interlinked..... Don't you just LOVE manual diagnostics ??------- I think that's right ?? I'm sure others will help out as well..............PS }-- We're not WIND-UP merchants on here but there will be the inevitable bit of Banter !!

Sorry to Hijack this thread, (my turn now!) Alan R, can you repeat what silver barrel paint you used please? I tried emailing you but it bounced back! (and I can't find the thread.) I think I found the stuff on Amazon but want to check! The reground crank along with Mr H's beautiful billet con-rods are all ready to go back together so we'll need some barrels soon... REgards, mark

Kick back, brings back memmories in 1973 on a Norton Commando 750cc Crap, also forgot to ask Reg if he tried the kill switch after the ignition switch? Probably won`t take any notice.
