Cant say if there is any link other than the dispatch of an engine number already numbered 16xxx to bishops stortford in 1949. The owners club didn't mention if it was attached to a frame but maybe something I could follow up with club though from earlier posts a rebuilding of a 1949 engine would not seem possible to the style of a 1957 engine given design changes advised above. 1957 engine number is as definite as I can be not a grind out and restamp per detailed examination today. Two numbers on top of crank case halves of 933 which presume just shows matched pair. Original registration document might be in Preston archive as MFR is Lancashire and one old reg site I looked at confirmed FR is Blackpool where RE say dispatched bike to. This would confirm entry in re ledger but suspect however record probably lost. I think we can be pretty certain left factory with current frame and engine numbers. Incidently my wife immediately liked bike as MFR can as well as 'mad for rovers' be interpreted as 'mad for Ruth'. I'll see if I get any luck with DVLA but could hit data protection issues and it is 60 years ago since first registered with the bike having spent considerable time in Northern Ireland. IF I do find out any more I ll let everyone know although it may take sometime. It is incidentally on the original registration number having been reclaimed from DVLA. I suspect we will never know exactly what happened but am very grateful for all the responses received to the post. Hugh
