Today I received a parcel containing a very good second-hand barrel and piston from our host. So, when I've got all the other bits together, including new rockers and bearing blocks, the rebuild can commence. I shall not be using circlips with "ears" which incidentally, the replacement piston is equipped with.

From looking at your photo it appears the gudgeon pin fitted to the piston was unsuitable for use with the wire ring used to retain it.
Pistons are machined to accept a particular type of retaining clip - with a matching style of gudgeon pin.

Changing the clip for one of a different and unsuitable design is asking to duplicate the problem already suffered - unless of course you definitely know the circlips supplied are totally unsuitable for use with the new piston.

If the eared (internal) circlips are suitable they'll also require correct orientation inside their groove to avoid stress risers within the gudgeon pin boss.

This is a bit confusing. The circlips in the pictures are factory fitted. The circlips in the online parts book on this site are of the more conventional (no "ears") type. Those fitted to the used piston which I have bought from our hosts have "ears"

Our hosts list the "ear" type in their accessory catalogue as an upgrade. I have ordered the plain conventional type to fit my replacement piston. Phew !!

Crank not trued up properly will push the gudgeon to one side, many Electras suffered this problem

How deep was barrel scored might have been an option to bore out to 87mm taking it out to 535, the accralite pistons are light years ahead of any indian one.
