I had this problem too. If you remove the lever from it's pivot you can attach the cable then refit the lever nut and bolt. You'll find the cable will soon stretch slightly, they all do, and you'll have slack for next time. REgards, Mark

SOLVED (maybe). I thought about the comment by Aethelric and so I tried the obvious option of removing the cable spacers that were fitted. The cables have good metal ends and wont pull through at the handlebar level end. It now has an angle of less than 90 degrees when actuated and the difference in feel and power is noticeable.The cable adjusters are set about mid-way - always better than being on full adjustment one way or the other. Hopefully not having the spacers won't have any adverse effect? Thanks again all.

Now to solve why why my gearbox leaks from behind the kickstart/gear change shaft - as ever any clues or tips most welcome.
