Old plonker mike I use different thickness washers (one on each leg side but each of different thicknesses) between the fork leg inside and the wheel spindle nuts, front wheel, and by doing this I can centre the wheel between the fork legs without squeezing the legs in or splaying them out. Doing it this way means that there is no pressure either way on the fork legs. If the fork leg bottoms are pulled in or splayed out then this may cause wear inside the leg as the damping components go up and down.
