You are partly right, I have never been able or bothered to try and understand it but as you say the orange returns to the alternator and it wan't till I split a loom to do a rewire that I discovered that once inside the loom the orange wire whilst it goes to the alternator it also has black wires spliced to it that go back to the frame earth so it is an earth for the headlight
