Stud removal it is! Hey guys, do I tap it regular thread or counterthread so it would potentially tighten itself while I am backing out the stud. Would love to have hands on help, but I am in Nevada - just a yank looking to get back to his roots Got a Mini in the garage as well. Thanks for the offer.

Dean, think about it - the stud is right handed (regular) so if you tapped the sleeve nut out left handed it wouldn't go on to the stud. I wouldn't use the sleeve nuts - just get some ordinary nuts of the correct thread form and lock them together on the stud (with thread lock compound if required) That should give you enough torque to get the studs out. If the stud still won't come without your locknuts slipping you could always spoil the thread above the nuts to get more grip, or even apply a blob of weld. Either of these latter methods would mean you probably would need to replace the studs.

Thanks Pete - definately replacing the studs and washers with Hitchcock aftermarkets. The studs are the four deep ones - don't see how I could get at them other than via the long cap nuts. Do you think that putting "metal weld" on the cap nut threads, threading them on, letting it cure, and then trying to back them out would work? I realize I would be sacrificing the cap nuts, but in the big picture I'm OK ordering new ones along with the new studs.
Thanks, Dean

Dean again - tried Mark's technique of drilling the top of the cap nuts, tapping the hole and tightening a bolt down the shaft - the problem is the bolt simply turns off with the cap nut - even tried tightening the bolt while simultaneously loosening the cap nut. Am I missing something here?
Appreciate any input.

Just a thought, how about a bit of petrol down the plug hole before refitting plug and wiring up; leave valves in closed position, kick it over and maybe the ensuing explosion (well, one "fire" anyway) may blow it up.....? Umm, may be best to just start the nuts on each stud just in case it is too effective!!
Actually, I still favour the rope trick, but don't use too buch cord; by using a small amount, the mechanical advantage of piston being near tdc will exert greater pressure........

Hi,
There's a small bolt down at the bottom of the cylinder between the pushrod channels which must be removed.
Have you done this?
John.
