What you describe sounds like you were riding on a flat tyre, or very low pressure. I'm riding on a rear Ensign with no problems but it is fairly new.

Thanks all. Its looking like Dunlop k70 or Avon Road riders so far.
Apologies if my post sounds like a rant but truth is the knobblies are dreadful in the wet.

I know some of you have them, but give up looks before you hit the tarmac

I fitted 'knobblies' as stated above and have had no issues with them except the wear rate. I changed from the OE tyres (i.e. ribbed front) because the front wheel locked up as soon as I tried to use the front brake on tarmac and a couple of times the front end stepped out on corners. I vowed never to fit that type again so I had to choose something else and I often use the RE for exploring (legal) unsurfaced or "unsuitable for vehicles" roads. Sounds like it's just a problem with the particular tyres you have.
