Guess it is impossible to compare the 2 unless you know the spec of the cams.

Anyway, when I sold the bike it had the standard 500 cams fitted with a 612 conversion, these are certainly higher lift than the standard ones, and that lift is the same as our hosts "performance" cams.

Anyway, the ultimate test will be through my built in dyno i.e. my backside when I get it on the road !!

Lots to do yet but looking forward to riding the end result.

I was interested because I have a set of 'performance' cams I was given by a pal who acquired them with a Bullet project. I intend to fit them to the Bighead I'm building along with a 535 alloy barrel I've also picked up along the way. There are no markings on these either so I'll have to dial gauge them to see if they match the figures quoted. If in doubt I have some Redditch S type cams here and I'll compare them too.

The way I see it is that they did make some difference to top speed to my 1996 535cc Classic, but the rate of acceleration (mainly torque) was better so they were worth installing - especially since I upped the drive sprocket to 19T.
Mind you the top speed is also governed by the carb as well and my 32mm isn’t enough to get over 80mph. Our main roads are dangerous at less than 60mph, so I needed a higher cruising speed than the auld beast was made with.
I wish I hed a set of S-cams, they are apparently the bees knees.

The "S" cam is the Redditch Bullet touring profile while the "R" cam was the sportier one. I was recently able to compare a set of original "S" cams with a set of our Hosts' reproduction "R" cams (not the sports or racing cams in the accessory catalogue, they're different again), and to the untrained eye - mine - there wasn't a lot to distinguish the two profiles, so I'm guessing the timing is different. "R" inlet part no. 39376, "R" exhaust part no. 39378 if anyone is interested.

Where the "S" cams really do score in in tuning Electra-X models, funnily enough, though there have been some good tuning results in classic Indian-engined Bullets too.

If you want a set keep your eyes peeled, as they do come up on ebay UK and in our hosts' used parts section from time to time.

Thanks for all the responses.

Hopefully I can expect the motor to pull pretty hard then - I know when I owned the bike first time around it still had the standard Indian bullet cams so I am looking forward to a noticeable improvement.

Checked the gearing earlier and it is running a 19t gearbox sprocket, depending on how well it goes I may look at a 20t sprocket.

Not looking for out and out speed so no need to run really tall gearing.

I'll keep you posted.
