Chris Tindal, I agree with your comment. It is very difficult to judge the strength of a spark out in the air, especially just by manual spinning.

A Magneto in good condition should be able to give a 6mm spark in clear air if briskly turned by hand.an easy test is to get an old spark plug and remove the earth electrode the spark should be easily strong enough to jump from centre to outer ring.

The SR1 is a brilliant piece of kit. I have been running one for over 40 years on a 350 Bullet and another on a 500 Big Head and both have been exceptionally reliable. However, when I rebuilt the 350 engine recently I decided to check I had a spark before trying to fire up the engine for the first time and could not get a spark. After trying substituting various components I put I back to the way it had been and kicked a bit harder (it was the first time I had kick started a bike after a hip replacement) - lo and behold a spark! Put the plug back in the engine and it started first kick. The speed of turning does make a difference!

was my explanation minimal, yes it was.

is it that much harder in reality, no its not.

inversing it is a 5 minute job at most.

To get the best spark the points must open at the point of maximum flux, and you need to insert a specific size spacer in the mag to hold it in the correct position while refitting the cam or you will get a very weak or no spark, I suggest reading the makers instructions if you need to move the cam. not hard but done incorrectly will cause problems.

Mauri, perhaps you could post a little more detail about your clockwise to anti-clockwise (or vice versa) conversion method, as Revband is still not buying it! I would be interested to know as I picked up a clockwise SR1 with an excellent spark last year, but yes, I also downloaded a pdf of Lucas' instructions following earlier comments.

It would be harder to describe how to revers an SR1 than actually do it. I have done quite a few, as Revband states, the points need to be opening when the magnetic flux is at its peak. Not rocket science.

Adrian, if you downloaded the manual then you know how to do it correctly.set the points to 12thou at fully open, remove cam, turn so keyway is at the top, turn approximately 15 degrees in the required direction, insert correct spacer as in manual, turn cam until points just begin to open and tap in place, check it's correct and tighten up. easy no?.
