As Pete F says, the gearbox case stiffener is a massive help. Before I fitted one (fitting instructions come with it from Hitchcocks, and it's simple) you could see the cover flexing when you pulled the clutch in.

If the pushrod is expanding lengthwise due to heat, this will tend to make the plates stay apart and therefore cause slip. Jamesy is complaining of a crunch when engaging gear, which is likely to be caused by drag.
fwiw, I adjust out free play in the clutch cable. This gives a smooth gear selection and does not provoke slip. (Apart from if I accelerate hard to 65 in 3rd, change-up and then w.o.t. The standard clutch can't cope with that, free-play or not! Rolling-on the throttle more gently does not cause slip.)
