I was not going to bite on this one, but just to follow on from what mike says, when you have a small collection of bikes you tend to check them against each other, sad isn't it?.

Naturally gents I defer to your meticulous record keeping suffice it to say however that for whatever reason I have only ever managed 50 mpg from my Ducati 860 GT and so far 68 mpg from my warmed 350 Bullet of unreliable parentage. I've never done a serious check on the 51 Bullet but my gut tells me that it will be only a bit better than the Bitsa. Perhaps it's all the hills here in Auckland or the thin southern air as they all burn a lovely mushroom coloured plug.

Excuse my ignorance here Simon, is an Auckland gallon the same as a UK gallon or an American gallon?.

To be honest I think 50MPG from the Ducati is pretty good, my modern ish Honda is returning similar.

To Mad Mike; It may be a 70 (80?) mph bike but are you touching that speed?  - Are you breaking the speed limit (30mph)to get those figures?!*

If so, I'd like to buy one instead of the moped that I'll be getting.

Yes we are a Commonwealth country and our gallon is an Imperial measure although in truth we long ago metricated and so purchase in litres.

Bleepy, read my description of how it is used. Yes it does get taken to those speeds. It is ridden fast, well as fast as a Model 50 will go, but is ridden without abuse. After all it is 54 years old and has done nearly 84000 full size Imperial miles. Incidentally it is is a fairly clean example of the model. You can see it on eother the Norton Owners Club site....search under models until you find the picture of a green 1958 Model 50, that's mine. Alternatively it is on the RC site under the section headed "Readers Bikes" along with some of my others.

If you are in the UK and want to come to MadMikes Gathering in Leicestershire on 27th May, you can even see it and sit on it.

Having said all of that my 2010 Triumph Thruxton only does about 50mpg, as I said before.....that's progress.

Those on here who know me, and there are some, will know my bike(s) and also my views on engine efficiency in the 21st century. I will bore you with the efficiency debate another day when we all know each other a little more.

Thank you for the kind invite MadMike, I may indeed take you up on that. I am in the UK although I nearly ended up in Belgium yesterday until I looked at their income tax situation, £££ yikes. Digressing a bit..

I'll have a look at the N.O.C + RealClassic websites, it sounds good to me though.TTFN

Had a look on the NOC website, under 'models' there is a 1959 model in green, v.nice + v.nice condition, if that's the one.

It's a bit of a chore following this sign-on protocol, different to other boards but not better

B, if that is SMWxxx then that is mine. It is a 1959 model but as was often the case registered in 1958. In 1977 it had nearly 100,000 miles on the clock, having been in daily use from new. My late friend bought it and restored it to the condition you see in that picture. It has done a further 84000 full size imperial miles since the resto It has not been stripped since then, it does not leak oil and is kept parked on fitted carpet with no drip tray.

Condition today? Pretty much tha same as in the picture, as you will see if you lookeon the RC site at a picture taken in 2010 from memory. Oh yes it still wins prizes and is ridden regularly. Indeed it did about 100 miles today.
