Thanks for your helpful replies.

I think I'm going to double check the timing, and if nothing shows up as wrong there, I'll stick to the 97 fuel. The top speed seems to have increased a few mph with it too.

Poor Ernies sick, i went to my usual Shell station today on a run and the bank holiday queue for the pumps was back to the off slip.

So i was forced to fill at a texaco with 95 before i ran onto reserve..

After 2 miles the exhaust note started to sound more harsh and then a hesitation on bringing on the throttle..

At junctions he spits and farts as i pull away and it sounds over advanced (pinking).

I cut short the ride and headed for home, i'm not going to fiddle with it, i will just drain the tank and chuck it in the lawn mower where it belongs..

Refill with V Power and i bet he's back to his sweet purring self..

In short i agree with Dave, Use the highest octane with least ethanol...

I know that somebody said you would need a 9% milage improvement before the cost is justified, but I don't agree.

OK, it does sound accurate, but I ride my RE's for the pleasure of it. They go a long way on a tank, and if they seem to be a bit happier on 97/98, then that is what they get! I would rather pay the extra 20-30p (i'm guessing) per tank to have the first kick starting and smooth (well rattly-smooth) running that I have got used to.

Haven't checked it for a year or two, but when I did there was a consistent improvement in MPG of 10-12%. It didn't seem to matter which brand of fuel -- Tesco's 97 was the same as Shell or BP.

The Internet is full of tips about getting better economy - Correct tyre pressures is probably up in the top three, but I've yet to find fitting an optimistic Enfield speedo as one way of [thinking] your saving fuel.

It used to be said that BP Ultimate was the only fuel that didn't have ethanol in.

I don't know if that still is the case but if it is that makes it worth the extra cost on its own
