RattleBattle, The black box item was designed and [shed] built specifically to eliminate the problem on some specific high performance Keihin fuelled engines where crossing back and forth between closed and open loop fuelling when ridden in traffic resulted in a very snatchy/dangerous throttle response because the fuelling was constantly jumping between 14.7 and anywhere between 13.1-13.6 (dependent on OEM mapping). I removed it from the bike it was made for - hence the 13.4:1 ratio - when it became possible to flash its ECU thus making it redundant.
My concern being that if my B5 was fitted with a high flow air filter and fuelling reverts to OEM Map close to Wide Open Throttle then having both a free flow exhaust and air filter could result in damage, but I believe I've solved this dilemma by restricting the butterfly for the last 5% of its rotation to hopefully prevent going open loop and running very weak - hence the reason for my original question. It's certainly not a performance mod, but it definitely makes for a more pleasant ride once used to its effects.

You'll be running open loop long before the last 5° of throttle. Accelerating up through the gears to get to cruising speed will be all open loop.

Ric: Thanks for the clarification on what you are doing. It seems to me that unlike the earlier Triumphs, KTMs etc that have unlocked ECUs, the ECU on the RE cannot be remapped, so the only options are either to use a piggyback controller such as the PCV or Dobeck (and I gather there is now a cheaper Power Commander that is similar to the Dobeck that doesn't allow timing adjustments, just fuelling) or to replace it with a carb. I chose the latter path, not because I'm a technophobe, but because there is no equivalent that I know of to TuneEcu by which one can adjust fuelling etc and remap the ECU to suit whatever exhaust and intake mod you care to make. One of the reasons I opted to buy one of the last air cooled Triumphs is because of this feature. The ECUs on the current ride-by-wire systems are locked.
