Thanks Alan, I will try the electrical tests once I know what I'm doing and then perhaps I'll think about a new loom if all else fails. But I'm sure the solution will be a simple one (feeling more optimistic now).

Hello PETER --- the simple answer is to invite the "electrician" who created this wiring "Frankenstein" to come and sort it out for you, I would have thought?

Happened to me today.. one hour ride... came back switched off as usual.. two hrs later all dead.. battery showing 6.8V ..new batter was fitted less than 3 moths back !!. Whilst riding Ammeter showed normal +ve deflection. Need to hunt the fault !!

Hi Hemant...recharge you battery and disconnect all leads from one terminal either pos or neg and measure if there is any discharge. If NO discharge is shown (Disregards a few microamps) then the battery is faulty. A 12 V battery will rarely go as low as 6.8v even if heavily discharged. Do the discharge test and let us know what you get.

OOOPS ...forgot to say: Switch multimeter to HIGH AMPs and connect test leads in series with the battery terminal and the lead/s that you have removed from the battery...you might be able to switch to a lower "amps" range (often different socket on meter) if discharge is small or non existant. Make sure everything electrical on the bike is switched off when testing.

Hi guys----------- LES, for safety reasons(ie no possible shorting) may I suggest that PETER 53 disconnects the EARTH terminal and uses that and the lead to do the test ??

Peter,
If your wiring loom has been done neatly , he obviously had some idea as to what he was doing so unless there is visible damage I wouldn't think of replacing it, it was working before so most likely it will be stator, rec/reg or battery, one of the three, very unlikely to be all three

Thanks lads... the bike is still running but I am not using a headlight or indicators to save on precious juice. Hopefully I will get a chance over the weekend to test all circuits, I have one of the old style multi-meters *(just need to figure out how to use it). Still wanna know why there are 2 reg/regs on there though?

Peter,
One is a rectifer the other a regulator. Some were fitted with them as separate units, some fitted with a combined unit. Problem is they all look the same, it is written on them but you may not be able to read it if they are old.
