Scaly, only Twins have the gearbox numbers duplicated on the crankcase. This was done in the engine factory at Bradford on Avon where (only) the Twin engines were made. No-one seems to know why! The Twins use a longer gearbox mainshaft than the Bullets which is a possible reason but that wouldn't help once the box was off the bike as it's not easy to tell the difference by eye.

Thanks John, Mark & Scaly, that clears that up, looks like my gearbox is probably original. I do wonder what these codes meant at the time.

There don't seem to be any real detail changes between boxes, (except of course completely different gearbox models have different prefixes) I think the prefix just indicates the batch as Albion produced them.

Chris, I've had the crank rebuilt with a steel rod (not our Hosts,) and balanced, my plan is to rebuild it with a 535 barrel and Accralite piston. I can't remember why it's stalled as a project at the moment, I probably got distracted by something else! If I decide to sell I'll let you know...
