It has been done, but it needs a really healthy alternator that puts out the juice at kick start cranking revs and an electronic ignition that will work with lower starting voltages without going full advanced like the old Boyer Mk3 ignition. Both the (generic) Pazon Sure Fire and the dedicated Pazon Altair ignition specified for the Bullet claim claim to do this. Pazon was started by ex-Boyer Bransden employees who wanted to come up with a better product. Boyer took note and brought out the Mk4 ignition which is less voltage sensitive.

Thanks Adrian, I've read that the MK 4 is better for low voltage and was wondering if it would work on my system ?

I would still choose a Pazon as the kit is better made.

The alternative is to fit an Electrex CDI stator kit (the version with the lighting coils) in place of the existing alternator, it is in effect a modern take on the old flywheel magneto with a self-generating electronic ignition. Our hosts sell the PVL version but this has no provision for running any lights.

I have managed to make good progress with the Pazon. I timed it at 34BTDC and had it running reasonably well. I fitted a Concentric Mk.1 in place of the original Mikarb, and this needs tweaking in to get the carburation perfect. The bike is not totally rebuilt yet so cannot take it out on the road to tweak it in the time-honoured way, "up a slight slope". I can't run it in the complex where I work on it due to very sensitive smoke/fire sensors which easily activate. Once the carb is set up I will strobe up the ignition and hopefully have a well sorted engine.
