Nigel, not so silly question, why can you not speed up to 55-60mph? Imo you should be able to cruise at 65mph with some ease.



My C5 can and will cruise the big wide A4 west of Newbury at 70mph. It will even cope with a bit of motorway at 80mph. Going that fast is not terribly pleasant but it's doesn't feel like riding a road drill and the bike will pull that kind of speed with me sitting upright. I may have a few more ponies but they do not increase top speed. On lesser roads it will certainly manage 60mph in some leisurely comfort. I do not mean my lanes, some them them are well dodgy at 25mph.



Your bike is technically "run in" but in order to make it rev higher without vibrating too much is to gradually increase the revs you use. This puts work (joules) into the engine to bed in the bearings and whatnot. In other words, I don't think you've finished running in the motor yet. Have you ever taken it up to 5000rpm in 3rd or 4th gear? - when you're it 50mph, drop it into 4th for a while.

You probably don't have a tacho, you don't really need one. I like tachometers and was tweaking the motor so I got the big Smiths thing but there is a little Harley accessory rev counter available that is a lot cheaper.



Some have said that putting a bigger cog onto the gearbox will sort the gear ratios and make cruising more leisurely but it reduces ultimate top speed and reduces acceleration because you're now in a higher gear. Personally, and I have looked at gear ratios and so-on, I prefer mid-range acceleration to flat out top speed. One easy not so messy way to up the gear ratio is to fit a bigger rear tyre such as 4.00x19 in place of the 3.50x19

Nigel, the final gearing on the B5 is exactly the same as on the C5. That extra tooth on the C5 cog compensates exactly for the smaller wheel. I did the maths for several cogs, sprockets, wheel and tyre combinations.
