Apropos the 'flopping about'... I experienced a bit of that when I changed the air filter for a conical. The results of my efforts can be seen here on this link.

Thanks for the responses. As I've already got the Amal I'll give it a go, and I can always revert to the Mikarb if I prefer it. I have invested in Hitchcocks' flange so that the Amal will fit properly on the cylinder head. I'll let you know what happens...
