Ok, noted!

So I need to tighten them up a little. How do you adjust the distributor chain again?

Loosen the three mounting bolts slightly and just move it until the chain tension is correct hoping that PO did not use a gasket sealant on it.

Nice little video that Scalyback, it always nice to see how other engines compare...BTW...I did notice that the loose timing chain has been wearing down the cover and the rear part of the case just above the scavenge pump holes...I'm amazed the design puts the chain so close to the cover at this position....Les

Hi Les, yes they do run very close, but on the other hand once correctly adjusted they don't seem to require readjustment for many thousands of miles, I check mine once a year on it's anual service and have not once had to readjust it since I restored the bike.

G'morning Dennis...that's good and now I know what that sound was in my Super Meteor 45 years ago there was a cyclic wurring noise I could hear...never bothered to find out as in those days you just had one bike for a few months and sold it to buy the next one....I only paid 15 quid for it and it had a double adult and child Busmar sidecar attached too. It still accelerated like the clappers and cornered like a sports car surprisingly...great fun (still haven't got the mag off the Connie...I've decided to wait for the new puller to come)...Les

Oh Bugger, you seem to be right Les. I guess this has happened before, and may be close to doing it again, but there were not any filings inside, although were was some black stuff which I am told is from new clutch plates.

I'll get it adjusted again but it is not straightforward as the pressures are different as the chain turns because the valve want to return to closed all the time!

So it's rotate the engine all the way and just have a little slack at the tightest point, or no slack at all? I am assuming the holes in the cogs and gears are reasonably centred on these?

I am a bit puzzled, any residue from the clutch on these cannot get into the engine, you have been misinformed.

To adjust the cam chain mark the chain then move the engine with the spark plugs out a little at a time checking the tension of the chain each time, there will always be a slack bit somewhere to check it, keep going until you have the mark back at the start having remembered where the tightest spot was, keep turning until back at this tight spot then adjust chain until correct (almost no slack but not solid tight). after adjusting give another full turn checking tension again, just in case you had the tight spot wrong.

Sorry, long drive and early start this morning. I open both sides up, the black stuff was in the clutch side! Bugger!

Thanks Dennis/, I'm going to copy that. Seems my trip home this morning got diverted halfway again, now in Swisselland for unknown time. Bit fed up, want to see my bike which is home in France!
