I have a Suzuki with a similar set-up and with the same slop issue. I placed a shim in the slot, which sorts it. My Bullet is the same, but not as bad so I have left it alone. It is irritating more than anything, as at first it feels like a worn bearing!

Thanks for the replies. It really feels like it is wrong to go tighter to spin, and some lateral pressure is taking place.

I tightened the nut pretty tight, as otherwise it goes slack over time and the brake outer wobbles. There was no loose spacer, washer or whatever when I took it apart.

The slot/tongue issue is no longer a problem; I think that tightening the 1" nut has allowed the tongue a couple of thou further into its slot and so is ok. The main concern is now this tightness of the spindle. Maybe slacken the nut off a bit and use Locktight? It does all appear rather hit and miss, though.... I'm extremely careful and the design seems to allow these peculiarities easily!
Thanks, Chris
