I was told that with whitworth, the length of the spanner was designed so that when you gave it a final 'grunt' doing it up, that was a bout correct.



However, I have no idea is this is correct or not!

Trouble is, some people's grunts are much bigger than others.
Generally I think people over-tighten fastenings in the belief that tighter is better - not usually true.

The previous owner of my Enfield must have had the strength of King Kong, I had to purchase a three foot long tommy bar to undo the nut on the rear wheel spindle.
