What I meant to say was that the Indian Enfields are beautifully engineered machines and that, in particular, the 4 speed gearbox is a masterpiece. :-)

Yeah I'm tip toeing around and doing my best not to break anything. I'm a fast learner but the landscape is completely new to me so I'm trying to find my bearings still. I've only driven the bike for about 10 miles so far and to the best of my knowledge the previous owner only drove it for a few miles after resurrecting it late last year and then put it up for sale this spring. I was hoping the gear shift would be a quick fix since all the gears are present and accounted for, if a bit difficult to find, but I'll wait for the workshop manual to arrive

I'd wait for the manual before taking off the outer cover and checking the year change mechanism. Its a good idea to then change gear a few times and see how it operates.
