Thack, if I unscrew idle screw to lower the rpm, the bike loses power and even turns off at slow speed

Have you definitely got enough play in the throttle cable?

Thack, what exactly you mean by enough play in the throttle cable? It moves freely and slide is going up and down (I looked into it by opening air filter)

Our posts keep crossing. This does sound like it's running too weak at closed throttle. Especially when the air screw is only 1/4 to 1/2 turn out. That seems too little to me.

Either try a larger pilot jet, or more likely have a hunt around for an air leak. To have this effect it must be downstream of the carburettor - that is, where the carb fastens to the inlet tract, or where the inlet tract fastens to the cylinder head. You can sometimes detect a leak in those areas by squirting something flammable at the joints when the engine is running. WD40, perhaps? If the engine speed changes there's a leak at the joint.

I would dismantle those two joints and inspect them carefully. Maybe even smear a bit of sealant on them, just to be sure. If there is definitely no leak, then order a bigger pilot jet. (Take the original out first, to make sure it is definitely clear).

Girish: you must have some slack in the throttle cable so that the slide can descend all the way down to the stop screw (the knurled screw). You should be able to turn the twistgrip a tiny amount before you can feel the cable go tight and lift the slide.

So, my list of things to check is:

1/ Slack in the throttle cable

2/ Air leaks at the inlet tract joints

3/ Check pilot jet is clear, of so order a larger one

Really we need someone to join in who is intimately familiar with this carb, as I am not, unfortunately.

Thack,

When you say air screw is running too weak you mean too lean or too rich. I assume at just 1/4-1/2 turn out, it is running too rich. no?
I will check manifold with inlet that fasten to the cylinder head tonight using WD40.

When you say I must have some slack, you mean free movement of throttle before it engages the throttle wire?
"You should be able to turn the twistgrip a tiny amount before you can feel the cable go tight and lift the slide." this is exactly how it feels to me now. I can feel a little free movement of twist grip before it engages the cable!

I am going to order 32.5 and 35 pilot jets. Currently I'm using 30 Pilot jet!

Thack, you are bang on! There definitely is air leak between inlet manifold and cylinder head. The moment I put WD 40, engine rpm falls down rapidly! So I assume its a leak there! I'll buy some silicon seal and air tight it

"Every time I put the motorcycle in neutral gear, rpm rises sharply"

My 500 does this occasionally.

I just give the clutch cable adjuster a turn and that sorts it out!

Girish, it was actually Frank who first suggested an air leak. :-)
