Just to make mention that it seems your ignition is WAY over advanced so retard it straight away in small steps untill the pinking stops. If you don't, your going to drill a hole through your piston. Then do the "plug chops" for getting the main jet size correct. With the correct main jet size fitted you may well be able to increase the ignition advance later for full power without pinking.

All brilliant advice; Bullet owners like thier bikes, pragmatic, sound. No droopy chains or drippy crankcases. Bullet 65, 2005, 1100miles. iron barrel, VM28 Mickarb. Pilot 30, main 117.5, P4, needle second from bottom. 7.5:1 comp. I need more fuel into the oven, but can't get onto the main jets befor running at speed it seems, so running weak. Plug chopping shows weak. Spectacular club ride and equally engine hissy fits, lost interest in project go better, but now encouraged. Thanks. Looking for needle but not sure where the haystack is! Solidarity and Guinness will get us through?

I particularly like Alan's advice; yes, leave the emotion locked in the fridge, and it is not a quick fix scenario but a journey of trials by fire basically. This will take me a while to sort out but I will report successes and failures for everyone to laugh at. That was supposed to read 11000miles

A few of us have had similar problems at the top end after increasing the breathing and air flow. I followed the advice to drill the main jet to 1.5mm and it cured all the problems. It runs so much better and really goes like stink!

---------------additional item. The needle has 5 grooves in and they are numbered 1 to 5 starting at the TOP. So, I think your needle clip is in position 3 ie mid-way. Is that correct ??

Allan thanks for hanging in on this one..I had it on one below midway, that's second from bottom, and have now moved it to bottom groove. I'm going to put in a richer slide, and increase main jet to 125. Also go down to 18 tooth sprocket, and confirm where the timing is at. If that doesn't tick the boxes, I'll open a can of Guinness and watch the telly. Oh, and recent messy weeping from pushrod head gasket side, that will need new gasket soon, so I can take peak at the piston crown then, might be interesting. HO HUM.

Hi Al. You are going to do all that fiddly carb work and the big messy job of replacing the 19T sprocket (All that oil drainage and replacement, gasket scraping, clutch and engine pullers, cost of new sprocket etc).........without doing some ignition adjustment first that will take about 2 minutes with just one small screwdriver and will guarantee to end the pinking?
