OK, some advice needed please... I had 40 minutes or so to look at my forks today. Drained the oil, it was white and really smelly. Given the new stuff is black and not that smelly I suspect a change was long overdue! The caliper side fork leg is leaking, so I tried to strip it to change the seal - I cannot separate the top chrome tube from the fork end at all! Am I missing something, a hidden nut perhaps, or a technique I dont yet know??? I recall this being an issue when I changed it last time - cant remember my solution then. Might nip down to a local mech for professional help and assessment, but want to do it myself if possible. Any help appreciated... and why would my oil be white in the fork?

Update... oil is white cos the seals are letting in water. The tube and ends separate by, for example, fixing the tube horizontally in a vice and clouding the protruding threads with something heavy - obviously protecting surfaced and threads as appropriate. New tube required (and ordered) along with seals and various O-rings to try and make my fork legs oil and watertight. Will rebuild when they arrive... had to get brake pads too as they were coated in oil (and were getting a bit past it).
