Hi Thack, yes you are quite correct as I have just proved testing a few condensers with my trusty AVO. The size of the kick would indicate the storage capacity or value of the condenser but I'm not sure whether the needle will ever fall back to infinite resistance. In the ones I've tested both new and old there always seems to be some leakage albeit very high resistance. That is where having a comparison helps but whilst you can prove it is definately faulty I don't think you could say with certainty it is definately OK under operating conditions.It might help doing the tests after warming it with a hair dryer or similar. In Stilton's case, if it never sparks even when cold then I would have thought that these tests would show if the condenser was the likely culprit.
