Old coils sometimes work just fine when cold, but start to misfire when hot. When cold again, this "procedure" repeats itself. This is due to faulty insulation on the windings that crack up when hot due to expansion. This should however not be the case with your coil, as it is only a year old, not fifty years. regards, Anders F. R.

------------- unless it's a 10 volt coil within a 12 volt system ??........The coils supplied to me were designated as "12v" on the box but supplied for the Honda GL1000 as OE spec...This bike originally had a ballast resistor system, which would require a 10v rated coil to work with.........I've ordered some twin-lead coils from our hosts (these are designated as 12v on the coil itself) and will let you know what happens.............

This may be of use to some but when my coil suddenly died the other day. The first thing I checked with a spark tested was at the plug one end on the plug other in the plug cap no joy. Then I pulled the HT lead out the top of coil and stuck the spark tester one end on plug other straight into the HT hole on coil still no joy. But test meter across coil inputs and Amp meter both were showing current input so definitely the coil. (( Cause My guess over stressing )) I notice the clip and HT cable was rusted and blackened by what looks like arcing even inside the hole was a bit blackened surprised I never got no popping or difficulty starting. So when I fitted new coil and good quality HT lead I sealed it in after clipping in with expory putty like on modern coils then the rubber cap to stop water ingress. Bike now ticks over perfectly. As I say it was strange because there were no pre warning it blow just like a bulb my guess is all the rust and blackening arcing made it work harder and harder until it just popped during that last 20 miles blat. I blame that silly clip in system why not a screw in like on old coils and plug caps.
