Mmm similar to Vespa66's issue in that the skills of a good TIG welder are called for to replace the broken off lug, however I think you'll get away with tightening it up again with a new nut and a lock washer.

Thanks for the link, WannaBRetired. Either the page was not working or I was not working t that time (breakfast), but will take another look later.

Thanks to Colin F and Simon, I have the parts ordered now. The bolt is hanging down and at an angle in the pictures, which is hiding the gearbox lug! It can just be seen at the very end of the bolt.

TODAY, I will do what I should have done a long time ago. Familiarising myself with every part of Tornado. Next time something sounds or feels 'wrong', I will investigate properly.

Thanks guys!

I did wonder about that link myself when I first went on it. What you do is click on the headings at the right hand side of the page, then select an item.

Exile has hit the nail on the head. I rode down to the Bro's place about 90 miles south a while back. Thought I heard a clatter as I came around a bend at speed. Turned out to be the 3/8 through bolt that anchors the side stand and base of the fame and holds the last lug on the header pipe. Fortunately I was in a place that had Cycle thread taps and dies and plenty of 3/8" rod so all was fixed in a jiffy (including the two frame spacers that had dropped out with it). All I had to do was a bit of preventive maintenance and all would have been good. Salutary lesson!

What is best to stop the nuts loosening? loctite or paint on the threads?

Luckily, Tornado's engine and frame are all painted green.
