Reading it again it seems from the coil position access to the wiring is a bit limited. Sounds as if the coil has been moved at some point perhaps to aid cooling, and the wiring extended using non standard colours. The coil should be mounted on the frame top tube under the tank. Perhaps it is a non standard coil too big to fit there.

The coil is tiny and buried, between the two strengthening plates behind the headstock it is not open to the wind.
It does not appear to have been moved, but I would need go into water above seat height for it to get wet.
