Hello again. Thanks for the replies. Simon, it's a solid piston so no luck there.
Well I finally received the stethoscope in the post. A great tool but despite being able to hear all sorts of other internal noises I still couldn't pinpoint the source of this noise. As it appeared to be coming from the drive side main bearing area I stripped down the clutch and rebuilt it without the casing so that I could get access to that side of the engine and the run the engine again. The noise could then be clearly heard coming from the crankcase breather and it ceased when I removed the valve body and the small breather valve discs. There was also quite a considerable pressure release with each piston stroke. This suggests to me that maybe I need a rebore and, as it's a SV, I may as well have new valve guides fitted at the same time. If anyone's got any further suggestions before I go to the expense I'd be grateful.
