It just occured to me, that I once again have not been precise in describing the ammeter situation. My ammeter is #141630 from our host. The needle was just next to the maximum mark on the + side. Hope this helps.

I am sorely confused on account all of my ampmeters show the quantity of current in amperes whilst it is the voltmeter bit of my multimeter that shows me voltage. The only time for me that the two come together they produce wattage somthing I do not think can be measured. .... That little bit of whimsy out of the way i think it is time to get ready for a BSA club night ;)

Jacob, the confusion comes from the fact that you are calling amps, volts it is obviously 6 amps you are talking about not 6 volts. Good to know the OEM rec/reg will handle the higher wattage, next one I do I will give it a try and see how it goes. One other thing you could try is run a wire directly from the batt + to coil + and see if this improves the spark. This will tell you if you are loosing power through the wiring/switch etc which it seems you are telling us regarding the voltage drop at the coil. If this is the case fitting a relay to power the coil directly from the batter will solve this. The Honda CB1100 boys do this as a first ignition upgrade because of old wiring and switches

Oh yes it can be measured!

IIRC, Watt hour meters are what the leccy company puts in your house and then reads it and charges you an astronomical sum for running a cooker ring and three LED lights!

my mistake calling it volts. I can see now why people got so upset. Norm, the voltage drop occured with the aftermarket coil. When spring comes around I will do a test with both coils from your describtion. But I'm still curious about how the smaller PVL coil from our host performs. Jacob

A duff battery will result in an excessive charge rate. 6 amps is too high however I'd also test the accuracy of the ammeter as they are a crude piece of kit.
