Found the problem! At some point that mainshaft nut had been tightened so hard as to force the oil thrower over the splines and hard up against the dog, the splines having cut their own slots in the oil thrower. I have assembled properly, tightened up the nut and it's all looking good. I have run out of garage time for tonight though so haven't fitted the clutch centre yet but I can see that it's going to be fine.

Pict from what I have measured you should have 23.5nn from the face of the thrower to the end of the thread but being an Indian part it can vary a bit. It should be up against the high gear pinion and it should be about 5.8mm thick
