Thanks gents, yet again you come up trumps. Bertie - was thinking of M & M's but wasn't sure as they're not the nearest and I thought I would be taking a bigger risk of a tug.... That's if I was going to take the chance at all... Which of course I would never have dreamed of.... Much

There is something which is worth remembering when dealing with such matters as SORN and MOT; when the current continuous registration legislation came in, the MP who introduced it said something along the lines of "We are trying to ensure that road vehicles are properly regulated for safety and security. We are not trying to catch out law abiding citizens who are honestly trying to comply with the law".
What this should mean is that if you fall foul of some minor regulation - displaying and out of date tax disc, or (as happened to me) getting clamped while the bike was newly insured but on SORN outside my house on the morning of the test - then you can plead not guilty and cite that as evidence that Parliament did not intend that people like you should be prosecuted under the law.

I can't say I've actually tried this; shortly after my unfortunate clamping episode I emigrated to Guernsey and was tried and found guilty without my knowledge. Guernsey has no MOT, road tax or SORN, and is in a different jurisdiction to the UK (ans Swansea).
I do have a little moment of paranoia when I step off a plane at Gatwick...

With MOT's it is always an idea to have a basic knowledge of the legal requirements as some testers make up their own additional rules! Some research pays dividends. For example you don't have to have a separate engine and frame number and in fact there is no reason why the number stamped on the engine cannot be used as the vehicle ID number if no other number exists on the frame. This is by no means uncommon in the case of specials. Also, many testers are not familiar with older technology. My AJS, for example, has taper roller wheel bearings and I always have to take a workshop manual with me to prove that play at the rims is not only acceptable but is indeed necessary!
Aren't MOT's such fun??

Winkie you are right about some younger testers. Try giving them a Commando with its Isolastic engine mounts and a swinging arm which is fitted to the emgine plates! You have to explain in words of one syllable that what they think is worn SA bushes is simply flex in the rubber mounts for the engine.
