Dean when you had the cover off were you able to use the operator to get the gears sliding in and out. I don't think you can assemble it incorrectly in there and still be able to get the end cover on

Norm, yes I could. So it seems that the problem must be in the linkage. Every so often I can get it into gear and pop it back into neutral with the neutral finder lever.

I can get the gearbox into first gear by use of the neutral finder lever, but not through use of the shifter. Once in first, I can get it back into neutral with the neutral finder lever. Does that make any sense?

Ok Dean, With the linkages on the left side removed are you able to with a pair of mole or vice grips on the crossover shaft able to select any gears. It is so hard with these left shift boxes because you can't use the shifter with the cover off to see what is going on

Also Dean, remember to rotate the rear wheel slowly while changing through the gears

Norm, I can get first gear with the shifter, but can't seem to shift up to the higher gears. Are the pillar bolts supposed to be tight on the striker plate, or do they need to allow for movement of the plate? So does the striker plate need to be fixed by tightening the pillar bolts against it?

Dean,
I assume the pillar bolts you are refering to are the 2 which hold the adjuster plate. The need to be tight on the adjuster plate, but this is where you adjust so that it will select gears. Lockit up at one end of the slot, try, move to the other end of the slot and try, also try in the middle, somewhere in there it will work. Teeth on ratchet look up and with the 67 (f/c stop plate and spring retainer)not fitted you can try shifting through the gears and you can see what the ratchet is doing, it should pick up on one side for shifting up and the other side for shifting down

Norm, the manual I am using calls them pillars, but that is what they do - they hold the stricker (adjustor plate) in place. That sounds like the issue, guess I need to get the adjustment correct on the striker plate. By the way, are you in the UK or in the states? It's 8:30 here in Nevada, but early morning in UK. Thanks for your help.
