I will admit that the motor was on the bench when I did it so I could sight a gap all round. I also had the head and barrel off so it was easy to test that there was no interference. Ill accept that some form of temporary spacer is probably safest if you are setting it up in frame.

Hi guys---------- if it helps any, I used SIMON's "nip & tap" method but employed a small, bright torch to view along the rotor surface, and a piece of white paper held at the back (nearest the crankcase)to highlight the gap itself..... After a bit of tweaking I arrived at a situation where there were gaps at all the relevant places, just not all the SAME gap, alas...... it's been like that since last year with no probs. at all.......

Yes even gap all round would rely on a higher standard of manufacture. The was at least .010" runout on my rotor so just avoiding contact was my aim.
