Alan - not taken as disrespectful at all mate, I appreciate your advice. As I remember, got the bike on an quiet road going about 3/4 throttle up a slight incline so the engine was working. Kept this going for 20 seconds or so then cut the engine, coasted to a halt, whipped out the plug and looked at the colour of the ceramic insulator between the tip and plug body. Sound about right?. Plug was always too dark & sooty according to the pics I've seen in haynes manuals etc. I've got the richer slide in the carb, but I'm not sure how much this affects the mixture across the whole range of throttle opening. I'm no expert but I find working on the bike almost as enjoyable as riding it.
