Hello ZITMAN--------- no need to use a DTI, --- 1/4" is known in the trade as KNACKERED !!-------- What year is the bike (engine) and its' mileage, and what sort of tuning is it in ie. standard---mild performance---full blown road-racer ?? Did you have any back-fire probs on starting during last year ??---What oil do you use and how often are you changing it ??? ?? My own personal opinion re}--- hi-flo pumps is }---Because the oil flow rate is governed by the smallest aperture within the system I fit them where oil QUANTITY is required ie}-- where roller bearing big-ends and opened-up rocker feeds are used...If you intend to keep to the floating bush big-end then I would stay with the standard pumps but fit our hosts by-pass valve kit...... As to Indian or Hitchcocks spindle ?? NO CONTEST------Our lads know what they're doing------- plus they're easier to talk with in the UNLIKELY event of any returns (usual commercial disclaimer !!)-------------

Hi Alan,

It's a '99 bike, was originally a 535 lightning (truly hideous), but last summer I converted it to more of a trials look.

Standard tune 535 motor, cannot be sure of mileage as I don't have the original speedo (but don't think it is high mileage).

I have been changing oil regularly at 1500 miles (my personal thought is oil is cheap and engines aren't - Somewhat reinforced by recent events).

I am almost certainly going to keep the floating bush and am in agreement as regards our hosts replacement spindle. I was seriously considering the pressure relief mod.

Cheers

Zitman, Pull the rockers apart and if they are full of whitemetal in the slots, the problem was not the pump because the pump was working to put the metal up there. I will never be fitting another floating bush, can't be bothered wasting my time

i had exactly the same happen to me a couple of years ago on a 350 ,it did everything even crank cases at the time it did,nt really matter what had caused it as every thing had to be replaced, but since the event i,ve wondered weather it was a worn pump spindle that did the damage or worn main bearings which in turn took a couple of teeth of the spindle so now i always check for play in the mains as well as the pump spindle for wear ,i wonder if this could also be the reason for oil in your sump passing through the timing side main.

Steve, what is important to find out if the spindle was the cause or a victim of a failed bush. I believe the spindles get a bad rap for being poor quality and I feel this is probably not the case in most engine failures

my point exactly norm, the way i see it is if you have a loose bolt jiggling about on say front engine plate it will ruin the threads it does,nt mean the bolt is at fault, if that makes any sense

Norm,
I take your point, I did not notice anything metallic in the slots during what was, admittedly, a cursory inspection but will have a more detailed look at the weekend.
