In the example of my BMW that I gave I keep the tank as full as is reasonably possible but I can't ensure it is full absolutely all the time. This problem did not occur before the introduction of ethanol in fuel either on this bike or my others, some old, some new. It is not a problem on these other bikes; I think the BM is particularly prone but fuel stability is the issue and ethanol is probably the culprit. REgards, Mark

I've had the problem with water in the tank of my Enfield from time to time. I'm not sure how it gets there, but it does. And, yes, the bike doesn't run too well on it. If it happens, I drain the float bowl, and also drain 100ml or so from the tank via the reserve tap; this usually contains a small amount of water.

When I got my VFR the tank was very rusty, the fuel cap drain was blocked so every time it rained the water getting into the fuel cap recess went into the tank. When I treated the inside of the tank with molasses to get rid of the rust I drained the tank through the fuel tap, I then switched the tap to reserve and waited for that to stop running. Once that stopped I found there was still 6 litres of water in the tank. I can only assume the fuel pump can suck this fuel up from the bottom of the tank otherwise I'm carrying around 6 litres of fuel I can't use

And our fuel doesn't turn to gel, leave a litre in a container for an hour and it is gone, leave fuel in the carbs it just vanishes, doesn't turn to varnish or gel
