Mark, just behind the timing pinion where the crank comes through I can see what looks like a bronze bush in the casing (pinion still on because I haven't got a puller yet) Will this be the bronze bush in question? if so it looks like it has one. The date it left the factory was Aug 58. Do these late engines have higher lift cams?

Chris, mine is a mid 59 engine so it looks like we've narrowed down the changeover point! When I say high lift cams I'm referring to the "S" cams which were fitted to all Bullets from 58(?) onwards. The cutout on my engine (which I suppose may not be original?) would even take the "R" type cams and is much deeper than on my 1953 500. Incidentally, our Host's performance cams are not copies of the Redditch "R" cams, Allan told me they tried them but eventually developed their own profile using more sophisticated methods than the Factory!
