Alan, the new EFIs have an automatic decompressor which is based on one used by other manufacturers (Yamaha?). The gear on the exhaust cam is machined out for this device which holds the exhaust valve off its seat until the engine is turning at more than 350rpm. Above this speed centifugal force causes a flyweight to operate and this allows the exhaust valve to close and the engine to start. Hopefully sprag destroying kickbacks will be a thing of the past with the EFI?

 Rog,

Interesting point about holding the valve open till 350rpm. Most of the damage to sprags was done when the motor was stopping or stalled, not in the start mode. Obviously some did fail on start up but the majority failed  when stopping when the motor still had inertia speed, but not enough on that last stroke if it hit compression. Having said all that I have heard very little about sprag problems with the EFI's.

Alan,

Chenni wasn't listening for the last 20 years so why start now. Out here it was our fault they were blowing up

Hey guys,

Just a quick update...

Since finding all the corrosion within the ignition switch I decided to try and bypass it with a spare fuse I had and low and behold..... the bike started and all lights worked without cutting out!!!

Tomorrow I'l try to give her a run out and see if the whole problem has resolved so fingers crossed!!!

This could be a bit dangerous. I have heard stories of riders setting off with the stand down, and they finished up spread accross the tarmac.

After my initial trouble with this switch I made sure it was well tightened, (was initially loose), and then locked it up with 2 locknuts. No trouble since.
