There was an instance - with Asbo 30, a 350 4 speeder, where the end cover would not go all the way home after converting to close ratios. This turned out to be due to my removing a rather home made gasket from between the casing and inner cover.

Hi, just to clarify, we are talking about the inner cover to which is attached the gear change mechanism? Vince
yes!
Mainshaft and sleeve are the same, bearings are replaced, aslo close ratio spocket but has the same dimensions as the old one.
I do not understand why it does not fit anymore. I do not know how to solve this problem (after some seriuous investments in getarbox, it feels extra strange.. what can be different? The casing is the same, cover is the same, is not a different cover. It has fitted for many years, now it does not fit anymore..

Hi, If with the layshaft removed it still doesn't fit then the problem lies in mainshaft. 1. Has the sprocket been fitted therefore pulling the sleeve through the bearing. 2 the mainshaft pinion dog if fitted with the three dogs facing outward. 3. The high gear pinion is fully home against the dog and the oil thrower is flush again the gear. Vince

yes, i cannot find anything wrong with these points, but am not sure what you mean at point 1
ah wait, you mean the rear chain sprocket (18 T) no it is nog fitted, but the sleeve is all the way down. The big gear is all the way against the bearing.

You cannot tighten the nut for the chain sprocket without the chain/possibility to block the sprocket?

I 'm afraid i do not understand where the problem was? It should fit with the std gasket? It does not 'set'on a home made gasket?

It might be an idea to disregard my comment, as it would appear Indian 4 speed boxes have a gasket, while British ones don't and you seem to be dealing with more than the thickness of a gasket anyway.
