For years I had BSAs, equipped with Monoblocs. I just use the technique I learned back then, (1970s!) but made easier now because my Bullet is only 8:1 CR and it has a decompressor, the BSAs didn’t and my 250 had a 12:1 piston from a racing Triumph Trident; it could really kick like a mule.
I press the Bullet’s float tickler for a count of seven when the engine is cold. That’s just enough to cause fuel to begin to trickle out. I then “suck in” with the ignition off and decompressor pulled over two compressions. It will then usually start first kick. If it doesn’t, I just tickle it for a few more seconds, suck in again and kick.
Having ridden it that day it’s best to first try without tickling but it might need some depending on how much it’s cooled down.
One thing I recently did was to fit an “Iridium” spark plug. I decided to do that because the engine occasionally coughed and cut out if waiting at a junction (or at our local railway level crossing which seems to be shut as often as its open these days). I knew the carb idle mixture was set right but the problem began to happen more and more often so I was sure the plug was ready for a change. The iridium type are relatively expensive but I just thought I’d give one a try and it immediately cured the fault.
Built like a gun... could go BANG!
