Hi Trevorch----------Yes, it's so easy here in the UK to forget the Internatonal nature of this lovely site. I used to work for the MoD in Dusseldorf, Hannover, Dortmund, Essen etc as a Diplomatic and Postal Courier for a few years driving on the Autobahns in our "State-of-the-Art", Chevette Vauxhall, (Black), BAOR--courier, for the use of. as they would say. At this time of the year I do understand your reluctance to venture out on 2 wheels. It's the only time I really felt "Bone-numbing" cold. Yours is the best course of action, given the situation I think. Good luck and do keep us all informed of progress won't you ?? Best regards---

Just got a message from my dealer in Germany that the importer has delivered a replacement EFI. They had already reported my problem when the speedo cable broke!!!

I am quite happy to wait a month to take the bike over, when the weather is warmer and I am less busy than right now.

Will let you know if this fixes the problem or not.

Cheers

Martyn,

Until the engine is hot combustion will not be complete which causes problems with condensation and unburnt fuel. you should therefore get the engine up to temperature as quickly as possible without putting too much stress on the engine.

The quickest way of doing this is to ride off as soon as you start up. Fresh oil will be at the main bearings within a second or two and the rockers will be supplied very soon after. Until then they will be fine with the oil that was present from last time the engine ran. Remember, you don't need the oil to do any cooling at this stage so you don't really need that much. (I just stripped and engine which had been stood for 4 months and there was plenty of oil still at the bearings)

The oil will warm very, very slowly at tickover and I suspect the splash lubrocation to the cylinder walls will not be very efficient at tickover. This is just when the cylinder wall needs all the lubrication it can get because of the condensation and unburnt fuel.

The absolute best way for your engine would be to preheat it but that's hardly practical.

Just my opinion.

Peter,

I dont disagree with what you say. My concern was not to do so much regarding the oil (although important I believe), but more to do with the ECU and FI unit.

As I understand it there are a number of sensors fitted in and around the engine, recording for example, manifold pressure, oil temperature, O2 sensor heater, throttle position sensor, just to name a few.  These sensors are all working together and giving feedback to the ECU, thus giving best engine operation for any given situation.

It has been discussed elswere, that even after a rideout the idleing can be heared to be hunting slightly untill everthing settles.

I must add that the bike handbook does state in several places/pages, to "allow the engine to warm up, failure to do so may result in damage to the engine". Not my words!

Just a few thoughts
