Hi

Has anyone got any advice on changing over to the new style worm nut with the neoprene seals.

Do I have to remove timing cover or can it be all done from outside

It's a cover-off job. Remember the worm nut has a left handed thread! There is a special tool to undo it with but you can get away with a thin slender spanner of the correct size. While you have the cover off you can take the opportunity to examine the oil pump spindle that it engages with. Check for wear and any chipped teeth. If in doubt- change it out. If that spindle fails you lose all lubrication so....  If in doubt- change it out!

When you take the cover off it is best to do it with the bike leaning over to the left which will minimise the risk of the timing gears coming out with it. Make sure that any shims fitted on the timing gears stay on their correct spindles. There will be oil dropped when you remove the cover, even if you have drained the engine.

Oh and be careful when you put the cover back on, make sure the gears engage gently.

Many thanks - what an excellent piece of easy to understand - no jargon, advice.

It's always a pleasure to give advice when it is so warmly received :-)

Mark, further to Dan's comment on being careful when refitting the timing cover....put the bike in gear and as you tap the cover back with the heel of your hand, turn the rear wheel so that the worm gear gets the chance to mesh cleanly.

Also, since you may wish to remove both cams to check for wear (now that the cover is off), make sure you don't move the crankshaft too much otherwise you'll get the cams back correctly set but the distributor will be out.  I have marked the correct setting on all gears with my trusty dremel - do it temporarily with typex/white paint.

Also, as Dan says, you'll get about half a litre of oil out of the chest - feed it back in through the tappet adjuster opening (or preferably down the pushrod tube) after you've replaced the cover so that the pump is properly primed.

i thought the oil in the timing chest overflows back to oil tank via hole near dist drive gear.  feed pump takes oil from tank to bibend  return pump takes from btm of crankcase up oil line to rockers down pushrod area to timing case.

when youve got cover off might pay to check contact area of pumps and lap them in to casing, a simple tool can be made with a piece of dowel and a couple of small nails use autosol or brasso and wash case well.
