I replaced the alternator. Keeping an air gap was a two day problem. Mr Snidal said to use a cereal box as your sleeve ,insert alternator. No go. Plastic milk jug ,no . aluminium drink can, YES. Followed around air gap with O.010 feeler gage, JOB DONE.

I use a section cut from a thin plastic drinks bottle -- like a 2-litre Coke bottle, trim to the right circumference, and it fits in all the way round.

Hmm. When I changed over to a higher output job (from Hitchcocks) the rotor was fitted with tiny blobs of silicone strategically placed in various positions around the rotor body. No shims required...
Bolted the stator in and the rotor dropped right in. Made the job very easy.

The reason I used seperate strips under each coil is the can thickness isn't exactly correct, I tap it about until they are all a sliding fit before nipping it down.
