As someone has already mentioned, use of grease gun can easily push seal out of it's housing behind the points plate: mine kept doing this despite less use of the grease gun. Of course it's easily pushed back in by removing points plate, but I found that replacing the grease nipple with a setscrew which I just remove and add a few drops of oil now and again has cured the problem. Actually, one of those old fashioned flip up oilers would be better still, and look "period". Anyway, 10K on and no sign of excessive wear having done this...... and no leakage.

Thanks - I'll check that this wasn't the issue before I pull the timing cover.

Makes me wonder if there's any need to oil/grease the distributor shaft as engine oil is obviously finding it's way along the shaft to the seal?

I think 350s had a bush rather than a bearing. Certainly my 2008 had.
So did my 2007.

It seems "later" ones went to bearings then the "last ditch final imports" went back to a bushing again. I get the feeling they were scraping the bottom of the parts bins with the very last ones.
2007 was the last year for UK exports of the old 350, so any 2008 models were effectively NOS, but domestic production didn't stop until 2010.
