I need to run a handle bar mounted auxiliary power take off,to power my phone/satnav.
I presently have a fused one running direct from the battery, but having left the sat nav plugged in after a fortnight I ended up with a flat battery.
Would I be ok to tap into the switchable side of the ignition switch for my power take off? It would be fuse inline protected.
The bike is a 2017 euro3 classic c5.
After 50 years plus of motorcycling,I,m still learning,you cannot kick start a fuel injected bike with no battery power.

I would use a relay. So the fused supply comes from the battery into the relay then out to your socket. The relay is powered up using your switched live. Then you can even use it to power high draw devices like heated clothing without overloading the bike wiring.



I don't like the sound of the term "Tapping in" which reeks of scotchlocks. I usually suggest people locate the relay somewhere in the "middle" of the bike (under seat, behind side panel etc) and connect to the live feed to the rear brake light switch using a double bullet/spade connector on the basis it's pretty much a redundant feature. If it goes wrong, you can manage without the rear brake switch for a considerable time.



Anyway. I did a detailed blog of how to do this on a CB500 on another forum several years ago but all the pictures should still work (if you register as a user, the pictures should appear in the text rather than as clickable links. I would only suggest posting on that forum if you have a thick skin though, it is full of shite stirrers).

I took my supply for the satnav from the horn live using a piggy back spade, and the earth to where ever convenient, don't use the horn earth. It is only live then when the ignition is on. I used a powerlet socket and plug.

Since posting this morning,I,ve found a product new to me called a piggyback fuse supply.
The supply would be to power a satnav,so I think this would be ok. Just when fitting, I get the supply terminal right as not to bypass the fuse on the supply to the power outlet.

Scotchlocks, no I would have spliced into a wire with a soldered joint.

An alternative with no wiring involved:-




The magnetically attached pouch holds the phone and an 8000mAh battery pack.

When I leave the bike I can just drop it into my pocket or my topbox with my helmet.

I added the cord as a safety precaution - just in case.

Hi Aethelric, food for thought with my other bikes,but I want a permanent power outlet for my go to bike,which is my enfield.
