Friction/drag, as Bullet Whisperer pointed out and a well-known "feature" of the 4spd. boxes.....Check out parts H14 and H15 available from our hosts to help counteract this.

My 59 Bighead doesn't do it at all, so I don't think its necessarily a feature. The gearbox is full of 00 grease.

Cheers for those part numbers John. That's got to be worth a try first-off. I'm not sure how I didn't notice that before when I was browsing the gearbox section.

To add to what I posted previously, it started to happen on my 350, having never done it before. It was soon accompanied by noises, difficult shifting and clearly something very very wrong. Cry havoc and let slip! The dogs've wore!
I stripped the box down and it revealed severely worn bearings especially on the layshaft; the left side one was pretty much worn through to the casing. All bearings replaced and it is OK now.
